Welcome to Parrish Academy!
Homeschooling was always a part of our family plan. My husband of almost 17 years was homeschooled for only one year in middle school, but even when we were dating (high school sweethearts), we talked about how awesome homeschooling could be.
One of my biggest complaints as a public school student was history. It was very disjointed for me, learning about Ancient Egypt one year and then World War II the next. I knew they weren't the same time, but I had no idea what happened in between. It was also a bunch of names and dates and memorization for tests, so I forgot everything I learned pretty much the second I handed the test in. Finally, I didn't know anything about other countries. I knew Kenya was in Africa, but I had no working knowledge of where it was located or anything about the history or culture.
I had a strong conviction that I wanted my kids to know the world, the different cultures, to know where countries were on a map and be able to understand how history in different areas of the world line up. I wanted them to understand that the world is constantly changing and that while most cultures have some differences, people are all people and require the same necessities, love and compassion.
This conviction became even stronger when my husband and I found out we were infertile and adoption (which had always been a conversation) became our only way to become a family. Our children are of different races than we are. Our knowledge of their family history is limited, but I want to share with them not only their own history, but the history of the cultures their ancestors came from and beyond, so they can feel connected to the world around them.
I have spent hundreds of hours on this curriculum and I hope that you enjoy it and find it useful. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, I look forward to hearing from you!
As far as more about me:
I am a wife and mother, my three children are adopted and are my favorite people in the world. I am a dog person and our pup, Ruhe, is my favorite of all time. I was a music major in college and I love to perform on woodwind instruments whenever I can. I am a private music instructor in the evenings. My hobbies include music, home decorating, running, and walking the dog. I have also recently started flower gardening which has been a challenge with a black thumb. My children are Josiah, Levi and Ketzia. Every year we travel to new states and our goal is to see all 50 by the time Josiah, our oldest, graduates. My husband is an Electrical Engineer and designs capacitors. We are high school sweethearts that have been married for 17 years. We live in Western Nebraska and love our small town life!
